Happy New Year, Aquarius! It's been quite a wait, let's hope it's worth it. The year starts off on a Lunar Eclipse in Cancer, foreshadowing a year of behind-the-scenes action, with the major eclipse and nodal action across the axis of your twelfth and sixth houses. This affects work matters and relationships, dealings with institutions, hidden issues, secret enmity and subconscious motivations—and can have an effect on your health, plus that of your partner. Communication will be the key, as you'll be inclined to withdraw from society.
With Venus on this axis as the year opens, romance may have to be secretive, or relegated to the world of fantasy and dreams. You may be more susceptible to false flattery—or unworthy attentions. Relationships from the past, especially if you were on the losing end, can intrude on the present in some way. Don't waste time indulging in the luxury of self-pity; rechannel the energy by helping those less fortunate than yourself.
Mars the Warrior is retrograde in Leo as the year begins. Leo is your solar seventh house, showing that partnerships, marriage and open confrontation will be a major flavour of the year. It's a curious astrological fact that marriage and open conflict are governed by the same area of the chart, but anyone who has ever been married will appreciate the irony. Anyway, Mars will be in Leo until the middle of the year, so you'll have to work in with others, in order to get anywhere at all. Later in the year Mars energises your mid-heaven, boosting your career and public image, pointing to a beautiful new relationship.
Stern, structured Saturn, the Lord of Karma, is the traditional planetary ruler of Aquarius, and as the year gets under way, makes his presence felt in Libra, the sign of his exaltation. Saturn is well-placed in Libra, your solar ninth house, remaining there for most of the year, with a relatively brief return to Virgo between April 8 and July 22, thanks to a retrograde period. Turning retrograde on January 13, Saturn moves back into Virgo on March 7, beginning a period wherein you'll need to resolve the leftover bits from the past three years or so, before he returns to Libra on July 21. More of this later.
Mighty Jupiter, Lord of Fortune, begins the year in your sign, widely opposing a retro Mars, so Aquarians can expect a good year, although some open conflict between you and your significant others may be expected, probably over matters that had more meaning in the past. Under this influence actions go too fast and too far. It is in your best interests to remember that there can be too much of a good thing. This is not an auspicious time for court decisions, travelling abroad, higher education, writing, publishing, or participating in competitive sports. Fortunately, Jupiter drops the aspect and enters his night sign, Pisces, on January 18, just as Venus enters Aquarius, so your personal magnetism increases, even as your interest in financial matters expands.
Uranus, your new-age ruler, is a somewhat disruptive force that has been stirring the financial pot in your life for the past seven years or so. Uranus starts in Pisces, so this unstable financial phase remains in force for most of the year, though it does ease a bit mid-year. Expansive Jupiter and wild-card Uranus will enter Aries mid-year, sparking up your interest in communication, travel and self-expression for some weeks, before returning to Pisces in August/September. This gives us a foretaste of 2011, when Jupiter dives into Aries for the year and Uranus begins a seven year trek through the fiery sign of the Ram. I will discuss this in detail in the body of the article.
 Relationships: the Journey to the Heart 
The year opens with a lunar eclipse on New Year's Eve with retrograde Mars rising in fiery Leo, your seventh house of marriage, partnerships and open confrontation, opposing the Part of Fortune which is in Aquarius. Now that's a warning not to charge ahead too quickly, or too act rashly with regard to partnership matters, or indeed to be too aggressive in pursuing your goals. When retrograde, Mars can bring old flames back to light, especially if they were former partners, wives, husbands, or competitors. With Saturn occupying Libra for most of the year, a second marriage will be in the offing for many of you, probably due to revived interest in said old flames.
Passionate Mars turned retrograde in dramatic, egocentric Leo on December 20, 2009, and will remain retrograde until March 10. Mars stays in Leo until June 7th, a long stay, since Mars only turns retrograde once every two years and two months or so. This makes it an important but trouble-prone phase when the energy focuses on partnership and alliances, cooperative efforts, and interaction with others. The company of others stimulates you to physical action all year, but particularly up to June. The action will be easier if you have a hand-in-hand approach. Other people will usually make the first move, leaving you to react. More than one open confrontation is apt to occur, especially from March 7 to March 31, when Venus bounces into Aries, the sign of her detriment, sexier and more avaricious. At this time Mars and Venus are in fiery signs and since Mars turns direct on March 10, the potential for forming partnerships that will fulfil your cherished desires begins to grow. Once Venus enters Taurus in April, entertaining at home and encouraging family gatherings are high on your list. Venus favours redecorating or enhancing the physical appearance of your home; perhaps adding books, music, or art to improve the quality, as well as the looks of your domestic environment. Harmonious relationships between family members should be encouraged. Real estate negotiations, legal matters connected with a family business, or the artistic endeavours of a parent are stimulated.
Saturn, your life-ruler, begins the year in Libra, turning retrograde on January 13. This influence has as much to do with the past as it does with the present. It will force you to throw out what is wasteful and to abandon unsuccessful situations, replacing them with something more solid and useful. The emphasis for most of the year is on broadening your intellectual horizons and reaching out for new experiences. You may be required to confront past disappointment, failure, or neglect in these areas. However it can also mean you will get a second chance. If something once prevented you from receiving an education or specialized training, engaging in cultural pursuits, or taking a more active interest in religion or politics, this year will allow you to do so. A second marriage, in-laws, or a court decision may also have an important role to play in what happens. Long-distance travel plans may be delayed, or circumstances surrounding such travel could become more serious in one way or another. Your responsibilities may increase, especially if your work is in education, computers, publishing, broadcasting, promotion, advertising and direct-mail. You may also be concerned with the job or health of a parent, or other family member.
Venus is in Gemini, your fifth house of fun, from the last week of April to the middle of May. You can look forward to a sexy time with charming companions, and, with Mars still in Leo till June 7, many of you will feel the urge to tie the knot, perhaps for a second time. This would possibly be to someone of a different race or culture, or whom you met whilst travelling, but in any case a witty and charismatic type who will bring you out of yourself and your old ways. This will be encouraged by glorious Jupiter moving into forward-looking Aries, on June 6, where he turns retrograde on July 23, leaving Aries and rolling back to Pisces on September 9. The most powerful days to consider your situation will be during the week before and after July 23, while Jupiter is stationary direct, because great progress can be made and plans instituted.
A big event close to the Full Moon on May 27th is the entry of Uranus into Aries, your third house of communications, self-expression, siblings, neighbours and local affairs, education and running around, an hour or two later—after having spent the past seven years in Pisces, turning your financials up and down and causing you to reconsider your personal values more than once. Disruptive, intuitive Uranus will be in Aries for a good while (seven years in fact, if we discount a few months back in Pisces due to a retro phase). Some of the effects will be immediately apparent, then drop out of sight, only to burst forth later. This transit (a foretaste of 2011) implies an unstable period for that will see significant changes in your ideas and methods. You will seek greater independence of thought and self-expression. New ideas and information flow through your mind. Some of your ideas or those you promote during this period may be so unorthodox, at least for you, as to be radical. Saturn opposes Uranus in the last half of July, so this period will be quite disturbing at a subliminal level, threatening your seniority and authority.Your traditions and methods will be under fire as opposing forces press for change and a new order. Though you may not totally escape some measure of this, flexibility, careful observance and cautious response to threats will see you through.
Still, while Uranus is in Pisces, the final stages of a strong, restructuring phase need to be completed. The loss of money in one enterprise may inspire you to make it up in another. Your expenditures may change as new or unexpected situations develop. The major influence during this period is not concerned solely with money and material wealth, it encompasses whatever you value, and that includes relationships. The loss or gain of an important relationship can cause you to establish new values or shift old priorities. New circumstances may challenge your basic principles, or as the case may be, place such an emphasis on what is really important that you abandon whatever is no longer meaningful. A key element of the influence during this period has to do with outside forces over which you have no control. The inspiration for the changes you experience may, at least in part, be triggered by the people around you, new people you meet, and situations you never expected to encounter.
Mars prances through Libra between the end of July and September 14th while Venus is in Libra too, so the energy-filled atmosphere inspires enthusiasm in so many directions it's tough to predict which paths you will choose! Your physical efforts focus on higher education, religion, politics, travel, cultural pursuits, foreign languages, writing, and publishing. However, there are many other categories that can just as easily attract your physical participation—speculative ventures, sports, court decisions, a second marriage, and activities or relations with in-laws. Use this a way to broaden your spiritual and intellectual horizons. Venus is at home in Libra, so romance, marriage, or any cooperative venture involving a foreign country or someone of another culture or race is stimulated. Issues connected with a second marriage, or a court decision may also arise. You may write, publish, or purchase books; perhaps art, music, antique or very expensive books. Advertising or mail campaigns, especially those aimed at romance or relationships are in the air. You might even get on better with the in-laws. Mars and Venus are conjunct in Libra on August 20th, just as Mercury turns retrograde in Virgo, your eighth house of sex, death and taxes. This is a banner day, so if you are partying (it's a Friday) be ready for some fantasy-fulfilling action.
On September 8th, sexy Venus slips into Scorpio, your tenth house of career and public image, just as mighty Jupiter moves back into Pisces in his retro phase. Mercury turns direct on the 12th, then Mars, the mighty Warrior, joins Venus in his night-throne, Scorpio, just as Pluto, the dark lord of transformation, turns direct after months of retro motion in Capricorn, your twelfth house. Mars rejoices in Scorpio, where his best qualities are expressed, but with Venus slowing there in preparation for her rare retro phase, a secret romance, or at least a secret fantasy comes forward as you deal with attractions awakening in the career, and more or less public, environment that you thought were long gone. Scorpio rules sexuality and in your chart governs career, communication, education and neighbourhood relations. So a secret affair is in the air, which may lead to a big commitment once revealed!
Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio on October 8th, conjunct the jealous and dangerous fixed star Zuben Algenubi (the South Scale), while the Moon trines Neptune and Chiron. Consciously or subconsciously the images you project to others are those of helplessness, glamour, and mystery. Others, attracted for reasons they may not quite understand or be able to describe, want to help and protect you. You can become more sensitive and inspired as well as inspiring. Spiritual and artistic awareness increases. Some of you will be seeking to improve your social standing, probably via a love connection. Sexual exploits will therefore follow during the retrograde phase, which lasts until November 18, when both Venus and Jupiter both turn direct. Now that will be a lucky day! Remember, however, that the Venus shadow period lasts until December 21, the solstice.
Venus in Scorpio is highly-sexed and risk-prone, so with macho Mars there too, we can expect some serious sexual shenanigans. All of which will no doubt in your case be best kept well under wraps, at least until next year (2011), when Venus enters Sagittarius and Jupiter moves into fiery Aries. A jealous love nature, intense passionate emotions, and a love of sensation, luxury and pleasures will be the flavour of the month. This period will present a powerful mating phase, but those already mated may find trouble with supposedly secret affairs coming out into the limelight, especially when Jupiter opposes Saturn on August 17-20 or thereabouts, so tread carefully.
Mars is moving forward rapidly by the end of October 2010, entering Sagittarius on October 28, just as Venus is cuddling up to the Sun in Scorpio. This will greatly increase your popularity with friends and associates, and will energise your desire to achieve your hopes and dreams, especially once Venus and Jupiter turn direct on Nov. 18. On November 29, Mars squares Jupiter, so avoid undue risk-taking, especially with money, work and health. Do not take risks if you cannot afford to suffer the consequences of the potential loss. The point to remember (and possibly avoid while under this influence) is that your inherent tendency toward expansive gestures will be enhanced. If you are prudent you will overcome whatever physical obstacles block your path. Whether or not you succeed, at least you will not walk away empty-handed. You should take a philosophical view, as the Universe always gives us what we need, even if sometimes it fails to give us what we want, or think we want.
Home and Family
The Moon is the key to family matters, and the Lunar Eclipse at the opening of the year indicates that the light of the Moon is in shadow. Home and family matters will tend to be overshadowed by the demands of work and health, which will undergo significant changes this year, changes that you may not seek, but which will be forced upon you by circumstance.
Venus rules Taurus, the sign on the cusp of your fourth house of home, family and new beginnings. Venus starts the year conjunct the Sun at the eclipse in your twelfth house, so your personal magnetism is high, but everyone seems to be on a different wavelength and time schedule. Promoting peace and harmony in your domestic environment may be fruitless. This is not the best year for artistic activities or attempts to enhance your physical appearance or beautify your home. Under this influence the pursuit of pleasure, romance, and amiable companions is likely to end with little or nothing to show for your efforts. Self-discipline and maturity are not likely to be strong—overindulgence, discouragement, self-pity, and oversentimentality being the elements more apt to thrive in your current emotional environment. If you manage to achieve emotional satisfaction in some measure, you may count yourself as having beaten the odds. Relationships from the past will surely intrude in some way, especially when Venus turns retrograde in October/November 2010.
Mercury rules children in your chart and begins the year retrograde. This suggests that hidden issues will emerge that will be hard to pin down and deal with properly. Use your intellect here, as emotional responses are likely to be misleading. Other people's children are not favoured either, as Ceres, having started the year in your eleventh house of friends and their offspring, turns retrograde in your twelfth house between April 28 and August 8. Ceres, mythologically the sister of Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto—and daughter of Saturn—is not a classical planet, but has become increasingly useful in recent years, especially in situations involving grief and loss. However, in some ways Ceres can be seen as the saviour of children, for in the myth she refuses to give up on her lost daughter Proserpine until she has been recovered and reclaimed from the Underworld.
Saturn's return to Virgo between April 7 and Jul 21 will see changes in financing for the home. There may be a new purchase, a need to refinance or changes in the structure or the division of assets or obligations with joint holdings. Changes in financial life or holdings will shift the focus with home or family concerns. Family money, loans, trusts or inheritance may alter your fiscal situation. Put new money to good use. Solve old problems. Get the money right and you'll get your home and family life right. Make decisions regarding this and other important matters in the two weeks either side of May 30, when Saturn is stationary direct. This is the best time of the year to implement new directions regarding financial matters, especially insofar as they affect shared obligations, and anything where other people's money is concerned.
Work and Health
Work and health are governed by the sixth house, which in your case is ruled by tenacious Cancer. The Moon rules Cancer, and at the beginning of the year is eclipsed in Cancer, so the lunar light is dimmed, and throughout the year, the eclipse series activates Cancer and its opposite sign, ambitious Capricorn, the sign on the cusp of your twelfth house of secrets. The Moon's light fluctuates, so although you like security in your job, your energy and concentration tends to wax and wane. With the Moon eclipsed, we can expect secret or concealed issues to affect your work, especially if you are connected with the government, large corporations, institutions such as universities, hospitals or prisons, or involved in the charity sector. Pay particular attention to the eclipses section of this article, as these will be times when your work and working environment are affected the most by cosmic stops and starts. The Dragon's Tail, the Moon's south node, will be in Cancer all year. This produces an atmosphere wherein we can expect separations or losses in the work environment, or perhaps concealed hostility among co-workers and employees. This transit implies a love of practicality at work, practicality and order, but also a sense of panic or anxiety should things not go as planned. Do not burden yourself or others with rigid expectations of proper behaviour or “perfect” situations; you need to let other people work out their own problems. Develop and cultivate your own ambition. An overconcern with other people's emotional wellbeing may show that you fear of taking charge of your own destiny. Avoid dwelling on the past, and making other people's feelings your problem. You are here to rediscover the thrill of achieving your goals—others will ultimately come in to support you! Healing Jupiter, the exaltation ruler of your sixth house of work and health, begins the year in Aquarius, announcing a good year ahead, and enters Pisces, his night-sign, on January 18, intensifying the financial aspects of work, working relationships and dealings with co-workers, underlings and related professionals. Jupiter remains in Pisces until June 6, when the Lord of Fortune speeds into Aries for several weeks, returning to Pisces on September 9. While in Pisces, the nature and scope of your work and daily responsibilities will expand. Money is or becomes the source of pleasure, which is fine if you can afford to spend it. Otherwise, restrictions must be rigorously applied. If you can make an enjoyable experience out of learning to conserve and invest current assets, finding ways to increase your income, you'll be fine. Resist the tendency to exaggerate your wealth or status to impress others and avoid unnecessary purchases of luxury items and status symbols. Other expenditures this year are likely to involve higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing, and cultural pursuits. Though there is no guarantee you will actually pursue it, your interest concerning health and physical fitness may increase, but it is more than likely you will take your health too much for granted. Should circumstances require you to seek medical care or advice, you may be fortunate in finding excellent physicians or other professionals to help you. Venus enters Cancer on May 20, and for the ensuing four weeks, you'll want to put harmony into your working environment. An office romance, or social event connected with co-workers may be on your agenda. Beautifying the work place is high on the list: anything from major renovation and redecoration projects to just putting fresh paint on the walls, installing background music and adding plants or art work to brighten the surroundings. A new diet and physical fitness program, or other personal physical enhancements such as beauty treatments, a new hair style, dental work, and cosmetic surgery are favoured. Mars begins the year retrograde in Leo, your seventh house. You'll put vitality and energy into relationships, marriage, business partnerships or joint ventures and dealing with other people in general. This said, you'll need to maintain a pleasant attitude to partners, spouses and significant others during the first six months, as the temptation will be to become impatient or angry. Learn to put your financial house in order. Bring peace into the home and watch everyone improve. Mars rules acute conditions: infections, wounds, burns, accidents and violence, so avoid risky situations and confrontations while Mars is retrograde between Jan 1 and May 17 (the end of the shadow period).
As the year draws on, Mars and Venus become close. Venus enters Scorpio on September 8, the sign of your midheaven, ruling career and public life, turning retrograde in Scorpio on October 8. During this phase your talents, looks and personality will boost your popularity with those who count. People from the past will become important and your actions help others in your life become more successful. With Mars also in Scorpio between September 14 and October 28, you'll cut a dynamic figure on the public stage. The sorts of afflictions to guard against, particularly while Venus is retrograde in Scorpio during October and November, will be infections, especially the kidneys and urinary systems, fevers, sexually transmitted diseases, and injuries caused by jealous types. Ugh. Saturn, your life-ruler, is in Libra for most of the year. This influence has as much to do with the past as it does with the present. It will force you to throw out what is wasteful and to abandon unsuccessful situations, replacing them with something more solid and useful. The emphasis is on broadening your intellectual horizons and reaching out for new experiences.
Saturn in Libra is a good place for Aquarians, awakening a period of positive energy. Hard work, planning, and organization that have marked your efforts in the past may now bring the rewards you deserve. Others are likely to bestow praise and admiration for the loyalty, honesty, generosity, and integrity you have demonstrated. You can correct mistakes that led to past failures and use whatever else you may have learned from these experiences to begin another enterprise that, under this influence, has an excellent chance to succeed. This period has to do with the success of your ego drives and the satisfaction of indelibly stamping your individuality on situations as well as in relationships. While emotional demands may have a part to play in what you go after, when all is said and done, it is more a case of wanting to take pride in and gain recognition for your accomplishments. If you have long sought a position of leadership, this is a time when you are apt to attain it.
Healthwise, Saturn rules chronic, hard-to-shift patterns and problems that are restrictive, depressing and limit mobility. Most of the restrictions in Libra involve interactions with other people, partnerships, or contractual arrangements. Kidney weakness is characteristic of this position, also backache, fatigue and arthritis. You should drink pure water to keep the kidneys clean and functioning. Large amounts of protein from animal flesh should be avoided. Have a curry instead!
Saturn turns retrograde on January 13, when fate seems to take more of a hand, and steps back into Virgo between April 8 and July 20, bringing some liability to mental disease, headaches and bowel weakness. If you do fall ill, you must resist the tendency to imagine yourself having a chronic condition. Do not allow yourself to become a hypochondriac, self-centred, gloomy, pessimistic or cynical. This transit will also restimulate issues you need to resolve that first emerged during the past three years, the last time Saturn was in Virgo. Joint income, or assets and status gained through marriage or business partnership, inheritance, investments and property you own or manage for others, and finances related to debt or the collection of debt return to the frame. The tax collector will cast his long shadow if you have been careless or made deliberate attempts to evade or mislead him in the past. Death is another focus of this influence, although it does not imply your own demise or even that of a family member or friend (except while Mars is retrograde, when significant others can suffer injury or even death). Some aspect of death will remind you of the need to appreciate life. Evaluate your skills and abilities, be resourceful and use them to create independence, financial and otherwise.
Career and Finances
Mars rules your mid-heaven, the house of career and public image. Mars begins the year retrograde and remains in Leo until mid-year. This shows that career matters will be under a cloud until later in the year, when Mars scoots ahead and combines with Venus in Scorpio during October/November. Issues from the past will be a major influence and will affect your career and partnership relations. Since Venus also turns retrograde this year, in Scorpio, the sense of fate and of the influences of past connections, financial, romantic and domestic, is strong. Energy and enthusiasm focus on partnership and other alliances, cooperative efforts, and interaction with others in general. Getting things done will be more difficult to accomplish by yourself than it might be with a partner or partners. Even if you want to be left alone, other people will find a way to push in, or possibly circumstances will make it necessary for others to intrude. In most situations other people will make the first move, leaving you to react. More than one open confrontation is apt to occur between January and June, so maintain your legendary cool, even if you feel betrayed. Venus enters Scorpio, the sign on your mid-heaven, on September 8, turning retrograde in this house in conjunction with Mars on October 8. Mars enters the mid-heaven on September 14, spending some energetic time there until October 28. This is one of the best signs of success, so long as you do not create enemies. Be sure to hold back, considering the rights of others. Resist the temptation to take an autocratic attitude and push your own barrow too hard.
Venus here too will motivate you to attain anything that catches your eye, or pursue anyone to whom you are attracted. Love in the career zone is in the stars. Desire for physical pleasures, as well as for music, literature, and beauty in all forms is enhanced. Under this influence your physical activities may involve artistic projects of one kind or another. Joint efforts with a partner or allies make work more enjoyable these days, even if the tasks at hand are not all that pleasant. You are attracted to beautiful cars. Greater desire for luxurious transportation may prompt you to go first class if you travel during this period. Aggressive tendencies may be muted by the elegance, charm, and amiability you encounter in others. Jupiter rules your house of personal finances and will enter this house on January 18, just after Saturn turns retrograde in Libra and as Venus enters Aquarius. This is a year of magnified expenses, when you will feel the push to buy status symbols, whether you need them or not. Your working life should expand, and mid-year, partnership activities will pop up, probably in the local environment, or possibly as a result of the influence of family members, neighbours or through people you meet while travelling. This is pretty much covered in the Work and Health section, but overall, career matters will be good and opportunities will come from hidden or even secret sources.
Mercury moves into his retrograde phase three times a year as a rule, for about three weeks each time. This year Mercury hits reverse four times, which is quite unusual. The retro phase marks a time of confusion and misunderstandings, which can affect arrangements, travel, transport, appliances, machinery and communications. The breakdowns that occur are a function of neglect, inattention, simple misunderstandings or component failure. They will often bring to the fore the very contingency we should have planned for—and didn't. During the retro period, and even for a week or two before and after, in the Mercury Shadow, we need to be aware of this tendency. It is best to put off major decisions, or signing crucial documents and agreements. It is not exactly wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely they will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!
Mercury's turned retrograde on Boxing Day, December 26th, 2009, in Capricorn, the sign of the Sea-Goat, your twelfth house. Information slides into view that must be kept confidential, but you won't be inclined to share your thoughts or ideas with others anyway. Information about the past, or contact with people from your past is in the stars, and you might be inclined to take covert action. Messages you receive at this time may be very subtle or contain hidden meanings meant only for your understanding. Under this influence you are encouraged to follow your intuition, get in touch with your subconscious, and pay closer attention to your dreams. The Cosmic Trickster turns direct again on January 15, at the Capricorn New Moon, which is conjunct fortunate Venus, so communications may arise with a lover from the past, and you can make progress helping the underprivileged. Mercury still behaves as if he were retrograde during the shadow phase, which lasts until Feb 4.
Mercury's second reverse motion cycle begins in Taurus, the sign of the Bull, on April 18th. This phase with Merc square Mars and square your natal Sun can lead to disarray in matters connected with home, family, and your domestic considerations. The focus of your attention turns to such things as real estate transactions, repairs or other matters related to your home or property, family discussions, family business transactions, and correspondence with or short trips to visit relatives. Be sure all the paperwork is accurate and up to date, as trying to get things done is frustrating. Incorrect information or directions may cause you to be too early, or too late.
