Capricorn, the Sea-Goat in 2010
communicative and ambitious
Happy New Year, prancing Goats! The cosmos seems quite Goat-friendly this year, with shining Jupiter lighting up your house of communication and the Dragon's Head—the Moon's north node, the karmic growth indicator—slithering slowly through your sign. This makes it quite a karmically significant year for you, as the moving finger writes and having writ, sits down for a smoke and substantial meal at Chez Goat.
The year kicks off with a Lunar Eclipse at the Full Moon in Cancer, your opposite sign, on December 31, 2009, which could be quite emotional, especially given that Cancer is your opposite number in the zodiac and both Mars and Mercury are retrograde. The pattern of eclipses focuses on you and your opposite throughout the year, as discussed later in this article, placing a major emphasis on your self-image and on your partnership relations.
It's a good year to develop your knowledge and skills with computers, or any type of machinery and mechanical equipment right up until June 7, when Jupiter speeds into Aries, placing an emphasis on your home and family, while giving you an inkling of 2011, when Jupiter will take your life to a new level. Jupiter re-enters Pisces on September 9, remaining there until January 22, 2011. Communications and travel increase during these Pisces phases, widening your circle of contacts and encouraging the exchange of ideas and information. Your artistic and design talent, or writing ability is boosted.
You'll probably take more of an interest in neighbours or community activities, as well as increased contacts with your brothers and sisters, if you have any. Your status with neighbours may increase in some way; you may seek to relocate to a more influential neighbourhood. Meetings and discussion groups demand more of your time and attention, so work on your presentation skills. Your interest in reading and communication increases and it's a good time to acquire telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices.
Saturn, your life-ruler, starts the year in courteous Libra, the sign on your mid-heaven, so you are likely to get what you have worked for: the recognition or increased status you deserve. However, what you gain will be accompanied by additional responsibilities. Saturn turns retrograde at the Solar Eclipse in Capricorn on January 15, just as Mercury turns direct after several weeks of retro motion in your sign.
Saturn's influence has as much to do with the past as it does with the present. It will force you to throw out what is wasteful and to abandon unsuccessful situations, replacing them with something more solid and useful. If you have not established long-range goals or developed a perception of what your ultimate destiny should be, circumstances will incline you to take a more responsible attitude to your direction in the future. Though you can and should seek the wisdom and guidance of others, letting them make decisions for you would be a mistake. Don't be tempted to blame others for failure or wrong actions in the past, for no matter how good it feels, others will not allow you to cast blame—except on yourself.
This is especially true if you have abused a position of trust or authority. Accepting the consequences of your own actions and taking charge of your own life will awaken the responsibility and maturity that places you on a higher level, where true success and fulfilment are now possible to attain.
Saturn returns to Virgo on April 7, as obstructive Pluto turns retrograde in your sign. This phase, which lasts until July 21, will require you to resolve any unfinished conditions you failed to deal with in the previous Saturn in Virgo phase, between September 2007 and October 2009. You may be required to confront past disappointment, failure, or neglect, but it can also mean you will get a second chance at something. If choice or circumstances prevented you at an earlier time from receiving an education or specialized training, engaging in cultural pursuits, travel, or taking a more active interest in religion or politics, this period may allow you to do so.
Pluto turns direct on September 14, just as Mars dives into Scorpio. You will be energised in coming weeks to take control of your personal power and set to work actualising your goals and dreams.
 Relationships: the Journey to the Heart 
Mars, fierce masculine planet of passion and action, and Venus, sensual feminine planet of desire and relationships—the cosmic powers of love—both turn retrograde this year: Mars in dramatic, egocentric Leo, your house of sex, death and taxes, and Venus in intense, sexy Scorpio, your house of friends, hopes and wishes. This suggests a year of magnetic attractions that have a sense of destiny about them. With the Dragon's Head, the Moon's north node, moving through your sign all year, this sense of destiny, or karma, will magnify your personal attraction and activate a year of expanded destiny for you.
With sensual Venus in your sign conjunct Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, at a Lunar Eclipse in Cancer as the year begins, and Mars already retrograde in Leo, sexual energies are potent. You will be at your charming best. There is danger, however, that idle flattery can be interpreted as a serious overture. Will you be the one who engages in such flattery? Or the one that misinterprets its intent! This year will demand an understanding of strategy in manipulating the outcome of situations, especially where the demands of social groups or diplomatic purposes must be served. Artistic endeavours can be controlled and powerful.
Mars turned retrograde in Leo on December 20, 2009, and will remain retrograde until March 10. Mars stays in Leo until June 7th, a long stay, since Mars only turns retrograde once every two years and two months or so. This makes it an important but trouble-prone phase that pressurises your financial situation, especially where loans, mortgages and the like are concerned. There is a sexual side of this placement, which can see action regarding the physical act itself, counselling, or surgical procedures you undergo. Mercury turned retrograde on December 26, so you need to pay close attention to detail, for subtleties mark your physical efforts.
The South Node moving slowly through Cancer indicates an intense desire to care for people. However, a preoccupation with other people's emotional well-being may be a sign of your fear of taking charge of your own destiny. This shows itself as dwelling on the past, being afraid to come out of your shell, making other people's feelings your problem. It presents you with an opportunity to rediscover the thrill of achieving your goals. Let other people work out their own problems; develop and cultivate your own ambition. When you do this, others will come in to support you! You are a natural born leader and manager. Focusing on your vision for the future will help you let go of the past.
The end of May and beginning of June create quite a remarkable set of developments as Saturn, your life-ruler, turns direct on your mid-heaven, just as disruptive Uranus enters pushy Aries, swiftly followed by giant Jupiter on June 6. This period marks a distinct turning point, when you must be prepared to let go of the past and take your life to a new level, whether by setting up a new domestic situation, despite the instability, or by taking control of the reins of power in your career.
Mars in Virgo between June 7th and July 29th stimulates a lot of action with travel, education, spiritual matters and publishing your views to the world. Some of you will undertake a second marriage during this phase, perhaps to someone who works with or for you. Dual attractions that arose earlier in the month turn to a more clingy, insecure feeling, as Venus enters emotional Cancer, reinforcing the urge to marry, or form a serious connection, perhaps live-in.
Mars bounces into Libra, shining there between the end of July and September 14th while Venus is in Libra too, so it's just the time to shine by making your lovelife more public, so to speak. This ties in with the urge to marry, or make a public commitment that has been accompanying your antics. Mars and Venus are conjunct in Libra on August 20th, just as Mercury turns retrograde in Virgo, so couples may speed off on an overseas honeymoon, and singles may be attracted to a dashing foreigner, or a mysterious stranger. This is a banner day, so if you are partying (it's a Friday) be ready for some fantasy-fulfilling action.
On September 8th, Venus slips into sexy Scorpio, just as Jupiter moves back into communicative Pisces in his retro phase. Mercury turns direct on the 12th, then Mars, the mighty Warrior, joins Venus in his night-throne, Scorpio, just as Pluto, the dark lord of transformation, turns direct after months of retro motion in Capricorn. This creates plenty of action in organisations to which you belong and friends will be exceptionally enjoyable. Indeed, a friend may wish to become more—and then some! Mars rejoices in Scorpio, where his best qualities are expressed, but with Venus slowing there in preparation for her rare retro phase, you will wonder whether the social whirl makes you happy, but diving deep into sensual realm will no doubt overcome your fears. Group diving, perhaps...?
Venus in Scorpio is highly-sexed and risk-prone, so with macho Mars there too, we can expect some serious sexual shenanigans. A jealous love nature, intense passionate emotions, and a love of sensation, luxury and pleasures will be the flavour of the month. Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio on October 8th, conjunct the jealous and dangerous fixed star Zuben Algenubi (the South Scale). Sexual exploits will therefore follow during the retrograde phase, which lasts until November 18, when both Venus and Jupiter both turn direct. Remember that the Venus shadow period lasts until December 21, the solstice, when the Sun enters Capricorn, bringing you back to reality.
Home and Family
Saturn spends most of his time this year in Libra, the sign on your mid-heaven, focusing your attention on your career and public image. The urge to marry will be strong with many Capricornians, and the potential for a second marriage is strong.
A good deal of the family interaction will be due to the movement of the Moon's nodes, the Dragon's Head and Tail, stimulating ego-conflict between you and your significant others. Partnership matters will seem inevitable in their progress, tinged with karma, even fate. Loss or separation from a spouse or partner can come from this, although the other side of the coin is a marriage or cohabitation that seems completely right, as though written in the stars. You will be seeking your place in the world, but don't forget the consequences of focusing on this to the exclusion of your emotional ties.
In the period between the end of May and the 9th of September, your fourth house of home, family and domestic conditions is stimulated first by the entry of Uranus, then Jupiter into Aries, the sign on your fourth house cusp, which astrologers call the IC. Both of these massive planetary powers make a brief foray into the cardinal fire sign, but the effect will be substantial, setting you up for the big transition in 2011. Unstable, unpredictable developments related to your home, domestic environment and family relationships tend to emerge, thanks to disruptive Uranus. You may unexpectedly change your residence, perhaps more than once. Family relationships are another target for change. The distance between you may be altered geographically, emotionally, or for other reasons. You may feel the need to become more independent of family ties and responsibilities. It may also be that circumstances, for one reason or another, cause you to extend your family circle to include non-relatives.
New cycles of activity and endeavour can abruptly begin, or, just as abruptly, come to an end—or their outcome may be vastly different from what was originally anticipated. A key element of the influence has to do with outside forces over which you have no control, often triggered by the actions of those around you, new people you meet, or situations you never expected to encounter.
Jupiter's visit to Aries, although not very long, gives a foretaste of next year's cosmic patterns. Jupiter benefits wherever he lands in the zodiac, so the changes at least for this phase and for next year, are likely to be good for you, so long as you keep your ego under control. You must confront obstacles blocking your path to success, but if you are prepared to act, you will pass the tests with flying colours and obtain your goals in the process.
Work and Health
Saturn, your life-ruler starts the year in the sign of his exaltation, Libra, the Scales. This marks a period in which you can attain what you have worked for, and when your seniority and personal power is at its peak.
The main health factors at work here will be the result of too much pressure. Be sure to attend to any symptoms, especially related to the kidneys and circulation. Saturn turns retrograde on January 13, then heads back into Virgo on April 8. Attend to any chronic disorders, especially connected with the digestion, and with arthritic or rheumatic problems, particularly in the fingers and feet. Issues that will need your attention during this revisitation include unfinished business with overseas or educational connections, religious, political and cultural matters, along with any publications or advertising with which you were connected between September 2007 and October 2009, when Saturn was last in Virgo. Saturn turns direct again on May 30, just as Uranus enters Aries and Jupiter too prepare to make the leap to the fiery world of the Ram. This will be a time of disturbance, as old things threaten to come to an end and new things suddenly appear.
Mercury rules your sixth house, so when the speedy Messenger is retrograde, in addition to the sorts of delays and malfunctions described in the Mercury section of this article, you can expect disturbances in communications, routines and relationships at work. Mercury begins the year retrograde in Capricorn, so despite the general good feeling, your personal affairs are likely to suffer some disturbance. Sun, Venus and Pluto are all close together in Capricorn, and Merc dances the backstairs tango all around them; so, as well as the romantic and egoboosting flavour of the month, the news is all about gaining some kind of personal power. You may, for example, develop strategies on diet and physical fitness that will help you gain more control over your body. Information and activities may relate to finance and investment, organization and methods for accomplishing work, or developing some aspect of greater self-discipline. If you are involved in research, investigation, psychoanalysis, renovation, or property assessment this is a period to watch for increased information or communication, perhaps even travel connected with these matters.
Mars also begins the year retrograde in Leo, so watch your heart and deal with any stomach pains or spinal disorders immediately. Take good care of any injuries sustained through fire or violence. The emotion of anger will endanger life and health. If you are nursing anger regarding past events, fear of deadlines, or other frustrations, this needs to be resolved this year, hopefully before August.
Overall it's a good working year for the Goat, so climb to the top of the mountain and enjoy the adventures on the way.
Career and Finances
You have Libra on the cusp of your solar mid-heaven, so Venus, the planet of desire, harmony and monetary gain, is the traditional ruler of your career and public image. Since Saturn, your life-ruler, is exalted in Libra, the influence of the lord of the golden age is also strong in this arena.
Saturn starts the year in Libra, so his best qualities are expressed, namely: structure, long-term planning, maturity, seniority; karmic rewards and past achievements. A well-placed Saturn is an influence that can bring supreme success. Patience and thoroughness will generally offset the more problematic influences of Saturn, at least in terms of the anxiety they create, because Saturn rarely troubles those who are straightforward, systematic, and above all, patient.
Venus starts the year in Capricorn, so your personality and the way you see yourself is very positive. This is a good thing, because you often lack the confidence to take the necessary steps. Not so this year.
Mars also begins the year retrograde in Leo, which suggests that problems with financial concerns will rear their heads this year, although, as the year draws on, these should be resolved and your career or other long range goals will benefit during August and September, when both Venus and Mars are in your mid-heaven. You will feel the urge to take important actions that affect your future. Although you may not necessarily desire to call attention to yourself, your efforts will gain public attention one way or another. Activities involving superiors or authority figures are stimulated. This means you may either do a lot of extra work with your boss, or for the government, or those with similar authority. Largely because of your efforts, a male relative or superior may receive recognition or status at this time, but don't try to achieve too much, or go too fast and too far, especially in mid-August when Saturn opposes Jupiter—you might deflate suddenly under the pressure!
Saturn turns retrograde in Libra on January 13, just before Mercury turns direct in Capricorn. This is a good time to make or implement your plans for the year ahead, especially those new year resolutions! While Saturn is retrograde (between Jan. 13 and May 30) the hand of fate seems to be more active than at other times, and so we can expect you to reap the rewards of past experience and contacts. Venus and Mars (the force that powers your actions) will both be in Libra during August and early September, when Saturn returns to Libra after a period revisiting Virgo, thanks to the retro phase. Since Venus also turns retrograde this year, the sense of past achievements bringing rewards is strong.
Remember that caution is advised during the last two weeks of May, when Saturn and Jupiter are opposed, for this is likely to see quite a conflict between the new demands of your domestic environment with the past commitments to your career, or the way you present yourself to the public. Work your way around the problems and don't count on others to help you, especially older or more experienced types, as you must rely on your own maturity to get you through. Since Uranus enters Aries on May 28 and Saturn turns direct on May 30, followed by deceptive Neptune hitting reverse gear on the 31st, it's a risky and deceptive period.
Mercury moves into retrograde motion three times a year as a rule, for about three weeks each time. This year sees Merc travelling in reverse four times, which is unusual. The retro phase marks a time of confusion and misunderstandings, which can affect arrangements, travel, transport, appliances, machinery and communications. The breakdowns that occur are a function of neglect, inattention, simple misunderstandings or component failure. They will often bring to the fore the very contingency we should have planned for—and didn't. During the retro period, and even for a week or two before and after, in the Mercury Shadow, we need to be aware of this tendency. It is best to put off major decisions, or signing crucial documents and agreements. It is not exactly wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely they will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!
Mercury's first retro cycle begins on Boxing Day, December 26th, 2009, in your own sign of the Sea-Goat. You have no doubt been experiencing an increase in communications and activities, for your name is on everyone's lips—and not just because it's Christmas. A boost in self-esteem and willpower sees you expressing yourself in positive terms. Travel and communications are closely linked with your ego and personal goals, so be sure to keep a weather eye open for what others may be doing, lest there be misunderstandings and path-crossings. Especially around January 4–9, you strongly identify with ideas that reflect your own thoughts and feelings—needing a more aggressive or a more dramatic forum to express your ideas. Resist the temptation to nick other people's creative ideas and put them forward as your own, especially in the workplace. Should purchasing a car or travel tickets be on your agenda, you'll be looking at more expensive models—and first class tickets. Don't miss the bus, or plane as the case may be. The Divine Messenger turns direct again on January 15, at the Capricorn New Moon, which is conjunct the benefic planet Venus. It's a good day to start over, but remember that the shadow phase lasts until Feb 4.
Mercury's second reverse motion cycle begins in Taurus, the sign of the Bull, on April 18th. Venus is at home in Taurus, so romantic favours are on your mind. Make sure you don't keep too many balls in the air, as Ceres is stationary preparing to turn retrograde and Venus is about to move forward into Gemini, the sign of dual attractions. Creative writing or speaking projects may be part of the scenario, but be sure all the equipment is working well and that the dates are noted in your diary. It is also a time of increased communication or travel with a romantic partner, or with children, or social groups. You have a masterful grasp of organisation, so be sure to keep all your schedules together and properly annotated. A vacation may include a guided tour, or feature some other type of educational experience. Plans, discussions, and business transactions at this time may involve entertainment projects, social events, children's education or activities, or speculative ventures, probably needing some readjustment as issues from the past challenge your plans. Mercury moves forward on May 11th, with the shadow lasting till May 29.
Mercury's third retro cycle begins in Virgo on August 20th, under the influence of the opposition between Jupiter and Saturn on your MC/IC axis. This creates issues regarding the role of family versus career, with some unexpected hijinks from the influence of Uranus, the ancient sky-king. Bad timing, past failures, authority figures, or simply a lack of generosity somewhere along the line frustrate your personal growth, economic prosperity, spiritual fulfilment, and intellectual endeavours. It may be a time when you are expected to give back some of the prosperity or success you have gained to help others get ahead. This may be costly and hard to do, but the need to deal with the past and prepare for the transition to a new level next year is strong. Mercury moves forward on September 12th, with the shadow phase around till Sep 27.
Mercury's fourth and final retro phase begins on December 10, 2010, in Capricorn again. A lot of important issues from the past have emerged during the year, chiefly concerning your partnership relations, legal matters, and battle for recognition of your true potential—and now is the time to put them into order. Be sure to make your position clear, lest some misunderstanding get you in deeper water than you'd like. Plan travel well in advance, and be sure to have the agendas confirmed in writing. Don't leave things till the last minute, especially Christmas and New Year arrangements. Mercury returns to direct motion in Sagittarius on December 30th, with the shadow phase dogging your footsteps until January 18th. Have a wonderful Christmas and an excellent year ahead in 2011!
Luna Life with Lady Moon
Your New Moon comes on Jan 15th, a Solar Eclipse. This is a massively potent phase for you, as there are *8* significant planetary factors in Capricorn at the time of the eclipse. The Sun and Moon are closely conjunct Venus, so your personal magnetism and physical charm are enhanced—and even though the Solar Eclipse marks leaving something behind and starting anew, the social energies are strong, as Mercury turns direct today in Capricorn after some weeks of retro motion. Phew! Don't forget that the shadow phase lasts until Feb. 4. Attending a concert, art or fashion show may be on the agenda. Partners or other allies are supportive, helping you attain personal goals and improve your self-image. Avoid any tendency for self-indulgence, or overstating your own importance and attractiveness, perhaps to the detriment of those in close relationships with you.
I'd say it will be a pretty hot weekend, when you can easily dominate the romantic scene. Just don't overdo it and turn the whole situation into little more than an ego-trip. Saturn is stationary, having just turned retrograde in Libra, the sign on your mid-heaven, so it's ideal to plan or implement career decisions this week, especially as fortunate Jupiter enters Pisces on Monday, beginning a highly communicative phase for you.
Your Full Moon comes on June 26th, a Lunar Eclipse, with the Moon right on dark Pluto. Expect partnership and marital relations to be rather prickly. Others will stand in your way if you try to get to the bottom of things. Save research and investigation, or engaging in power plays, until another time. Don't expect success if you want to dig up the past, or try to collect a debt. Psychological analysis, recycling, renovation or restoration projects are not favoured either. Others will be intimidated by (or envious of) your self-control—or any power you have. It will not be to your advantage to arouse such feelings on purpose, but what can you do about it if some people insist on feeling that way? Don’t waste your time trying to salvage egos.
Nevertheless, this is a good time for planting seeds. Trust your instincts. Stay focused and dedicated.
Eclipses of both the Sun and the Moon often indicate the end of a cycle or a significant change in the direction or pattern of the affairs governed by the house in which the eclipse falls. Eclipses of the Sun affect work, direction and relations with people in authority. Eclipses of the Moon affect matters connected with home, family and emotions as well as relations with women and children, and with the public at large. Both may affect your health.
The year begins with Lunar Eclipse at the Full Moon in emotional Cancer on Dec 31, New Year's Eve 2009, an emotional release to a difficult period indeed! The Full Moon in Cancer is always an emotional time and this is magnified by the darkening of the face of the Moon as the shadow of the eclipse passes across its face. Cancer is your opposite number in the zodiac, the sign that governs marriage, partnership and open enmity, for the two are quite related, as anyone who has experienced them can vouch. The pattern of eclipses focuses on you and your opposite throughout the year, placing a major emphasis on your self-image and on your partnership relations. Mercury is retrograde in your sign, in a difficult aspect to Mars, which is also retrograde. Be sure to keep all financial matters close to your chest, as there will be misunderstandings that can lead to trouble up until the Solar Eclipse of January 15, when retro Mercury turns direct again. Though your emotional life will no doubt be greatly affected by what you do during this period, the real focus and driving force is your ego. If, for example, a relationship comes apart during this period, it may not be due to the lack of love or affection, but because your ego was not allowed to grow or exert itself within the relationship. Under this influence, you may come to believe that you and you alone must solve your own problems. In turn, this can make it practically impossible to accept help or even consolation from those who care, and you retreat inwardly, becoming more and more isolated. Your pride may take a beating, but this is part of the growth and purification indicated under this eclipse.
An annular Solar Eclipse comes with the New Moon in Capricorn on January 15th, when Capricorn is fully loaded with cosmic players, including Sun, Moon and Venus, which is tightly conjunct the Sun. This New Moon has already been discussed, but I will restate and expand upon it a little here. Your personal magnetism and physical charm are enhanced—and even though the Solar Eclipse marks leaving something behind and starting anew, the social energies are strong, as Mercury turns direct today in Capricorn after some weeks of retro motion. Phew! Avoid any tendency for self-indulgence, or overstating your own importance and attractiveness, perhaps to the detriment of those in close relationships with you. Anything connected with computers, communications, writing assignments, mechanical and design projects, education, and training will be subject to disruption, thanks to a square from Saturn on the mid-heaven. Correspondence is unlikely to arrive on time and written material is more difficult, or other issues make it hard to deal with the tasks at hand. If travel is delayed, don't cancel the trip; simply work your schedule around the changes or inconveniences. Frustration may accompany business or commercial enterprises, community activities, meetings or seminars, and matters involving siblings and neighbours. Your normal pace may be slowed by respiratory ailments, hearing or speech difficulties, arthritis, or other complaints you either experience yourself or have to cope with in others. The movement of the eclipse cycle has been focusing heavily on your partnerships, significant others, and open opponents this year, ever since the Lunar Eclipse in sensitive Cancer on New Year's Eve. Trying to get things to run smoothly will to present a few problems. A change of heart can bring it all to a halt. You may have to cope with activities that conflict with others you have scheduled. Even if you follow directions, you can end up in exactly the place you didn't want to be. You had better prepare to deal with situations that block the path of your progress, literally or figuratively. Tread carefully this month, for on the day of the eclipse, Mercury and Jupiter are under severe pressure. Don't let the frustration bog you down in detail. Be ready for a big transformation in your partnership and legal contacts this month.
A Solar Eclipse comes with the New Moon in Cancer on July 11th. Good news should bring you financial benefit, but marriage, partnership, legal matters and family or domestic conditions will be subject to change or a cyclical ending, especially given that Jupiter is preparing to turn retrograde conjunct disruptive Uranus in fiery Aries on July 23rd.
