On September 8, 2008, shining Jupiter, the proud king of the ancient gods, returns to direct motion through the zodiac after a lengthy period of retrograde motion that commenced in early May 2008. Each year, Jupiter turns retrograde for approximately 120 days and the periods when he is stationary in the zodiac, pausing at the beginning and end of these retrograde phases, are highly significant in terms of their effect on life on Earth. When Jupiter turns direct, the week or so either side of the date of turning (when Jupiter is "Stationary Direct") is ideal for making or implementing decisions regarding the year ahead in terms of the matters ruled by Jupiter, but the flavour depends on where the change happens in your personal chart. In this article I will briefly outline the influences for each sign, so check your Sun Sign in the box below – and if you know your rising sign, check that too, for a more comprehensive forecast.
One of the most potent forces in our solar system, Jupiter has been retrograde in Capricorn since May 2008, generating circumstances connected mainly with ambition, responsibility, government, self-reliance and self-control, with the desire to rise to a position of authority over others. Capricorn is known for ingenuity, resourcefulness and mechanical ability. Trust-worthy, sincere and honest, this position enjoys general popularity. Unfortunately, however, when Jupiter is afflicted in Capricorn it produces a miserly disposition that denies all bar the bare necessities. The natural frugality of Capricorn can be expanded by the magnifying glass of Jupiter, generating an undue focus on security – and the desire to establish oneself securely in the world! In my previous article on Jupiter's entry into Capricorn in December 2007, I noted that the cosmos was generating a cautious sense of optimism combined with a need for stability and material security in the collective, especially at a political, financial and religious level (these are the areas mainly governed by Jupiter).
Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.
Pluto Turns Direct
It is significant that at this time dark Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, has returned in retrograde motion to just short of the partile (exact) conjunction with the Galactic Centre (GC), turning direct on September 9. This point, the centre of our galaxy (the Milky Way), was discovered in 1932 and is thought to contain a massive black hole with the mass of some four million times that of our own Sun. It has a significant effect when aspected, inclining people whose charts are affected to take a central role in affairs and to have a sense of cosmic destiny, often associated with a crisis of faith. Curiously, this part of the zodiac has long been known for its power of transformation, even centuries prior to discovery of the GC.
Pluto itself is a huge force for transformation through the overcoming of obstruction, leading to a sense of cosmic regeneration, which will be enlivened in the last few months of 2008, before Pluto re-enters Capricorn on November 27, a new start at the New Moon in Sagittarius. Pluto requires us to resolve the old issues that have been holding us back for a long time now, as the last few degrees of Sagittarius are Saturnine, except for the very last, which is forward-looking and ruled by Mars. Pluto occupies this warlike degree between Oct 24 (when the Sun enters Scorpio) and Nov 27.
Jupiter Trine Saturn
This is a very fortunate influence, though its impact will be modified by how it affects your personal chart, and the degree of your own maturity and experience. Hard work, organization, and careful planning will pay off – and benefits may come your way thanks to your seniority or authority. Restrictions and responsibilities can be eased, or even disappear.
The key to the good fortune will be marked by a wise approach to traditional values and experience. This aspect will contribute to your personal growth and prosperity and may also bring you under the influence of wiser, more experienced mentors and leaders who have what you lack.

You have reached the culmination of something you began or gained approximately twelve years ago. Expansion of your ego-needs may consciously or subconsciously be what forces the issue. Jupiter turning direct in your twelfth house of secrets, sorrows and sub-conscious motivation brings some advantage and hidden gains – even healing can be yours, if there is a need. Jupiter is a healing planet and Saturn is your traditional life-ruler, and these two are in a beautiful trine aspect on this day. Help may come from an unexpected quarter, just in time to save the day. Fraternal or charitable institutions, connection with government departments, large corporations, hospitals, universities and the like will be good fields for involvement. The focus this year is on behind-the-scenes or otherwise solitary activities, even mystical or astrological studies, so any plans you have in these directions can be activated now. Benefits or gains may be hidden, or at least not as obvious to others as might normally be the case, but you definitely need to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions, partner's health and concealed matters in general. Conservative Capricorn is not particularly expressive of Jupiter's optimistic and expansive energies, as it is the sign of Jupiter's Fall, a traditional debility. People feel more cautious than they did at the same time last year, with good reason! However, the trine to Saturn gives us cause to expect that the long-term foundations laid now will support us far into the future. The two weeks surrounding the direct station (when Jupiter pauses before starting to move forward again) are ideal for making or implementing relevant decisions that have long-term consequences. It's worth keeping in mind that Jupiter changes signs to Aquarius on January 5, 2009, so decisions we make now will be most readily put into action before that date.
