    Jupiter Turns Direct in Aquarius
It's Time to Refocus Our Priorities

The cycles of astrology are reflected in our daily lives, as well as informing the patterns of our human creativity, whether artistic or musical, social, political or financial. Jupiter turns retrograde once a year, and on October 13, 2009 he returns to direct motion still in the conjunction with Neptune and Chiron that has dogged us all for months. Jupiter is the planetary Lord of Pisces and Sagittarius, but this massive planet affects us all on his stately journey through the zodiac.

On October 13, 2009, shining Jupiter, the mighty lord of the ancient gods, returns to direct motion through the zodiac at 17°10' Aquarius, after a lengthy period of retrograde motion that began in mid-June 2009. Each year, Jupiter turns retrograde for approximately 120 days. The periods when he is stationary in the zodiac, pausing at the beginning and end of these retrograde phases, are highly significant in terms of their effect on life on Earth. When Jupiter turns direct, the week or so either side of the date of turning (when Jupiter is Stationary Direct) is ideal for making or implementing decisions regarding the year ahead in terms of the matters ruled by Jupiter, but the flavour depends on where the change happens in your personal chart. In this article I will briefly outline the influences for each sign, so check your Sun Sign in the box below – and if you know your rising sign, check that too, for a more comprehensive forecast.

One of the most potent forces in our solar system, Jupiter has been retrograde in Aquarius since June 2009, generating circumstances connected mainly with the efficient activation of traditional ideas and institutions, while at the same time remaining receptive to ideas and activities that on the surface may seem fantastic or bizarre. Aquarius is known for optimism, scientific development, and humane attitudes, combined with an original, even unconventional, approach. Science, mysticism, literature and music all benefit through a resurfacing of past talents or achievements. Unfortunately, however, when Jupiter is afflicted in Aquarius it produces a nervous and erratic attitude, with an undue reliance on past achievements and outdated techniques, inclining people to throw out the baby with the bathwater should such dependence on the past fail to produce the expected benefits. This year, Jupiter stations in the terms of Venus, so the outcome should mark beneficial developments in the months ahead. The Sabian symbol for this degree, Aquarius 18, is "A Man's Secret Motives Are Being Publicly Unmasked". Gosh. Let's see how these secret motives can be used to aid us all.

    Personal Progress

The inherent detachment of Aquarius can be magnified and stimulated by Jupiter, generating an undue focus on technical progress – often at the expense of the natural, Aquarian humanitarian goals. So the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been clear examples of this, due to the influence of planetary forces in Aquarius, discussed in a number of earlier articles. In my previous article on Jupiter's entry into Aquarius in January 2009, I noted that personal progress and growth are often achieved by dealing with situations that involve rebelling against tradition or the established order. Social attitudes are likely to become more broad-minded, especially at a political, financial and religious level, the areas mainly governed by Jupiter – giving us the remarkable and unprecedented election in the US of a black president with an islamic name, Barack Hussein Obama!

Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.

Jupiter, Saturn, and the Grand Cross of 2010

Mars enters Leo on October 18, 2009 (the day of the Moon Wobble!) and turns retrograde in the sign of the Lion on December 20, 2009. This rare retrograde phase will last until March 10, 2010, but Mars remains in Leo till June 7, just after Jupiter enters Aries for the first pass. The Mars retro phase will be explained in another article, but suffice to say that it will be a further cross to bear during this impending period of remarkable transformation of the world and those who dwell therein.

The relationship between Saturn and Jupiter, the two Great Chronocrators, is the primary marker of major phases here on Earth. Saturn, Lord of Karma, is the traditional planetary ruler of Aquarius, so will be the dispositor of Jupiter for the next few months. Saturn is currently occupying the final degrees of Virgo and on October 29, 2009 will enter the Cardinal Air Sign, Libra (the exaltation of Saturn), producing a good elemental relationship with Aquarius. Saturn will be in his own terms during most of the next twelve months due to a retro phase, but moves back into Virgo on April 7, just as Pluto turns retrograde in Capricorn, another Saturn-ruled sign.

Jupiter in the 28th degree of Pisces is conjunct disruptive Uranus (itself opposed by Saturn on Apr. 26) and, in conjunction with the malefic fixed star Scheat, opposes Saturn retro in Virgo during the last half of May 2010 (partile May 23), with Saturn turning direct conjunct the fixed star Benetnash, ominously named Alkaid in Arabic (associated with death and mourning, war and natural catastrophes), whilst still in the opposition. This star has been active since September 2009, when it was awakened by the conjunction of Mercury at the Virgo New Moon. Saturn moves back into Libra on July 21, so the period between April 7 and July 21 gives us the opportunity for a rerun of the less-than-savory Saturn in Virgo phase that we are now just coming out of. Ugh, it's my Saturn return revisited.

Responsibilities, restrictions, rules and regulations are in direct conflict with freedom during this phase, a key factor in blocking progress, happiness, and success. Authority is apt to be challenged. It may be best to resist the promise of something new and hang on to what you have, at least until the aspect has passed. People, especially the authorities, need to realize that the opposing forces are implacable and hard to get around, which only leaves the option of finding a constructive way to work around them or with them. NATO forces in Afghanistan really should take note.

Uranus enters Aries, on May 28, energising the Grand Cross in Cardinal Signs which hovers over 2010 like a vulture. Jupiter enters Pisces on January 18, just as Venus dives into Aquarius. Curiously, Jupiter only stays in Pisces until June 6, when he rushes forward into Aries forming the conjunction with Uranus, but thanks to his retro phase (beginning July 23) he opposes Saturn again in mid-August, moving back to Pisces on September 9. Jupiter does not return to Aries until late January 2011.

It's a confusing period, which will be explained in more detail in subsequent articles, but for now we can say that Saturn and Jupiter are going to butt heads next year (May & Aug. 2010) and the year after (Mar. 2011); so we are in for a wild ride, as these major aspects between the outer planets remain within orb for months, due to the retro phases.

    The Greater Benefic

Luck and wellbeing are primarily governed by Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic (Venus is the Lesser Benefic). When well-aspected, Jupiter the Thunder God brings superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences.

The week either side of Jupiter's direct station is the ideal time to make or implement long-term decisions regarding matters covered by his current position in your horoscope. Here is a brief outline of how Jupiter affects each sign as he turns direct again. The mighty Thunder God remains in airy Aquarius until January 18, 2010, which is when he moves into his night sign, Pisces (a Water Sign), which should bring a return to a degree of prosperity and spiritual consciousness for the world. Remember to check the forecast for your rising sign too, for a more balanced reading. To calculate your rising sign, click here.

Aquarius, the Water Bearer Aquarius, the Water Bearer Aquarius, the Water-Bearer Go to Top
Your uniqueness as an individual comes firmly to the fore, as Jupiter strides forward in your sign. Your personal magnetism increases as you become more focused on the delights of your physical appearance and the complex facets of your personality, especially up until Jan 18. It's time to implement decisions regarding your personal image and your health. Now is the time to grasp the nettle, the culmination of something you began or gained some twelve years ago. Whether it was a marriage, a business venture, or something else important, now it must take you forward to a higher level of personal growth and happiness, or this is the beginning of the end. Expanding and fulfilling your desires may be what forces the issue, whether consciously or subconsciously. The pursuit of pleasure can become more fulfilling, as can the pursuit of knowledge and greater spiritual awareness. The greatest benefit will come through structuring your goals and taking a leap of faith, yet tempering the urge to take a risk with the flavour of experience. Put your plans into action; push yourself forward and achieve your ambitions. Pleasure and recognition are heading your way.

Pisces, the Fishes Pisces, the Fishes Pisces, the Fishes Go to Top
Jupiter turning direct in your twelfth house of secrets, sorrows and sub-conscious motivation brings some advantage and hidden gains – even healing can be yours, if there is a need. Jupiter, your traditional life-ruler, is a healing planet; so while Jupiter remains in Aquarius, help may come from an unexpected quarter, just in time to save the day. Fraternal or charitable institutions, connection with government departments, large corporations, hospitals, universities and the like will be good fields for involvement. Decide to aid those less fortunate than yourself, and you will feel a glow of achievement, as well as reaping karmic rewards next year! The focus this year is on behind-the-scenes or otherwise solitary activities, even mystical or astrological studies, so any plans you have in these directions can be activated now. Benefits or gains may be hidden, or at least not as obvious to others as might normally be the case, but you definitely need to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions, partner's health and concealed matters in general. Anything connected with the ocean may also attract you, either as a fascinating field of study or as a satisfying hobby. Avoid gambling and extravagance — though if you are in the entertainment business, you should do well. Next year (2010 from Jan 18 on) in general is more favourable, as Jupiter will be in your sign for most of the time, except for a brief mid-year foray into Aries.

Aries, the Ram Aries, the Ram Aries, the Ram Go to Top
As Jupiter turns direct in your house of friends, hopes and wishes, you will be propelled forward into activating your dreams and aspirations, making money from career-related activities and having a better relationship with other people's children in your life. Saturn in your seventh house after Oct 29 with Jupiter in your eleventh implies good fortune through partners, friends, associates and even through lawsuits and competitors. Make your plans clear now. The income you gain from your career should expand and financial assistance from friends and associates will be available should you need it. Be content with what the world sends you, but if you owe friends money, make the effort to repay it before this energy diminishes. Matters connected with clubs or associations will pay dividends through positive action over the coming months, so join in and work towards the common goal.

Taurus, the Bull Taurus, the Bull Taurus, the Bull Go to Top
Jupiter turning direct in your mid-heaven brings good luck and fortunate developments in career and public life. Since Saturn too is in the picture, you can plan for increased responsibility in your daily tasks and routines, with a good likelihood of promotion, or if you are an employer, for taking on more employees as a result of increased business. You will attract the attention of prominent people who will be only too pleased to lift you into a better place, whether in the church, state, law or public affairs. You may even make a bundle through good luck rather than good judgement and if you are so inclined can feature in the stock exchange, banking, shipping, trade or trusts concerned with the public wellbeing. Make your plans now and set efforts into action, especially those that come to fruition next year.

Gemini, the Twins Gemini, the Twins Gemini, the Twins Go to Top
Jupiter turning direct in Aquarius is a very favourable development for the Twins, especially considering Saturn's imminent move into cultured and charming Libra. Jupiter in Aquarius and Saturn in Libra create a Grand Trine with Gemini, the ideal aspect for the expression of your talents. These three are all Air Signs, the symbols of good taste, intellect, media, matters to do with communications and so on. Plan for the remainder of this year to activate your intent, as your long-term aspirations slot nicely into place, particularly those connected with children, speculative activities, travel, higher education and personal development. Religious or spiritual awakening is more than possible too, as the coming months have much potential for success and personal growth, especially as a result of decisions you take now. You'll be keen to travel and overseas contacts will feature strongly in your life. A second marriage, or anything to do with in-laws and your partner's relations can be satisfactorily organized now.

Cancer, the Crab Cancer, the Crab Cancer, the Crab Go to Top
Financial gain is indicated through marriage and partnerships, but move with caution if taking on loans, mortgages or other forms of debt. Jupiter turning direct in the sign of the cool Water Bearer gives lenders the advantage, and Saturn entering Libra later in the month emphasises that it's time to gather your family around you and prepare for a shift to a new level, as old things fall away. This said, if you are looking to buy or refinance the family home, there may be some holdups, due to issues from the past that need to be resolved first. Because Jupiter is in your solar eighth house, your sexuality is likely to take a deeper form of expression than usual. If you have been drawn to the occult and other hidden subjects related to the mysteries of life, you can make good strides forward in this direction, especially if your plans extend into next year when Jupiter enters Pisces, which will be very favourable for the expression of the higher mind and the development of devotional matters. Joint income, investments, collection of debts, taxes, insurance, inheritance and the settlement of estate matters are all areas that feature should be resolved before the end of the year.

Leo, the Lion Leo, the Lion Leo, the Lion Go to Top
If you have not already formed that successful partnership, alliance, or marriage, these matters can be finalised in coming months. Anything connected with the local area, neighbours, siblings, education or travel will be valuable and your self-expression will take a more serious tone. If you are writing a book, or a blog, or any media presentation, the long-term outlook is excellent. Court cases, legal decisions, partnership issues and any open conflicts are likely to be resolved in your favour. Keeping a conservative attitude will serve you well in the months ahead, especially once Mars turns retrograde in your sign between December 2009 and March 2010. This arouses your competitive spirit and inspires you to be more aggressive, even physically combative, than you may ordinarily be. Be careful during this phase when handling sharp objects and hot or explosive materials, and remember to protect your head and face.

Virgo, the Virgin Virgo, the Virgin Virgo, the Virgin Go to Top
Put plans into motion to improve your working routines as Jupiter turns direct; relations with subordinates can also be improved, though you'll still be happiest when working unsupervised. Jupiter's transit through the sign of the Water Bearer gives a much more favourable outlook for your health and for relationships with co-workers, employees and associated professionals. Your work and responsibilities will stabilise now; there is still room for expansion, but do not try to do it all yourself. Delegate where possible: don't believe you are invincible, as pride often comes before a fall. Your job may require more travel, or advanced training, but you should not take your health too much for granted. Avoid procrastination and overeating.

Libra, the Scales Libra, the Scales Libra, the Scales Go to Top
This favours a year of romance and pleasure for you, dear Libra, and the week Jupiter turns direct is particularly excellent, with communicative Mercury and sensual Venus in your sign, as passionate Mars strides into Leo, a fortunate aspect for you. Speculative opportunities can still present themselves this year, so money can be made, but with stern Saturn moving into your sign, you should not set the bar too high, nor should you be unduly critical of yourself. Saturn is exalted in Libra, so the best side of the Lord of Karma should come forth for you. Formalise your plans this week and remember not to be over-confident, as Jupiter tends to excess. The next few months are very beneficial, even though partners may behave somewhat erratically from time to time, especially once Uranus joins Jupiter in Aries in June 2010. You will be inclined to take some judicious risks with gambling and speculative interests, but if you base these risks on a well-thought-through foundation, making use of your experience and expertise, you should do very well during the remainder of the year.

Scorpio, the Scorpion Scorpio, the Scorpion Scorpio, the Scorpion Go to Top
This year has marked the beginning of a twelve-year cycle of learning and new experiences for the Scorpion, as Aquarius symbolises your solar fourth house, the house of beginnings and endings. Your life must take things to a new level, or relationships, employment and other forms of personal interaction will likely fall away. Pleasant domestic relations and harmonious family surroundings are favoured. Real estate and home renovation, or perhaps selling up and relocating to the home of your dreams is part of this potential, so if you have not already done so, the astrological energy is good, despite the economic downturn. You may still feel the call of higher education or a particular study, receive advanced training, or take on long distance travel, writing, publishing, or promotion. Decisions you make now, especially those influenced by people you meet, will be catalysts for new ventures that affect the next twelve years of your life.

Sagittarius, the Archer Sagittarius, the Archer Sagittarius, the Archer Go to Top
Finalise any remaining travel plans and be sure to check any educational arrangements for the new year. Jupiter turning direct gives you a firm boost, and Saturn entering Libra adds stability to your career income and aids long term relationships with friends and associates. Your brothers, sisters, neighbours and the people you meet in your local environment can be the source of good fortune. Success comes through developing your mechanical skills, travel, or promotional activities that improve your status. It's the right time to acquire telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices. Creative writing, publishing, or educational interests are highly favoured in coming months.

Capricorn, the Sea-GoatCapricorn, the Sea-Goat Capricorn, the Sea-Goat Go to Top
As Jupiter turns direct in your house of personal finances, sensible decisions about the proper allocation of your resources and stable long term plans are favoured. Career decisions are also favoured, as bosses will be impressed with your careful planning and appreciate your more serious approach, for Saturn, your life-ruler moves into your mid-heaven on October 29. The deep consideration you have been giving your values and priorities (especially financial ones!) over the past few months now needs to be assigned and put to practical use. Some of your cherished values and opinions will come under pressure, probably through the influence of philosophies or religions that are different to the ones you grew up with. Jupiter stimulates you to go for status to impress people, tempting you to spend on luxury items and status symbols, but remember that under this influence money is the source of pleasure – which is fine if you can afford to spend it! Other expenditures concern higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing and cultural pursuits.

Even-handed Aquarius is not particularly expressive of Jupiter's optimistic and expansive energies, as it is ruled by Saturn, an influence that expresses caution, restriction and structure. It's worth keeping in mind that Jupiter changes signs to Pisces on January 18, 2010, creating a more relaxed cosmic environment; any decisions we make now will be most readily put into action before that date. The two weeks surrounding the direct station (when Jupiter pauses before starting to move forward again) are ideal for making or implementing relevant decisions that have long-term consequences.
